The Middle of Things.

IMG_5824

Last week I managed to snag a friend of mine for a few moments after our Downton Sunday event to snap a few quick outfit pictures. Besides the usual anxieties that come along with photographing myself in public, I managed to smash my poor tripod on the pavement a few weeks ago (the camera, thankfully, was unharmed). So out we ran into the middle of the street, in the middle of the winter.

Coat: J. Crew, Skirt: Thrifted, Blouse: Laura's Vintage, Belt: Thrifted, Necklace: Lawrence, Shoes: Thrifted, Bag: Thrifted

This is a pretty standard cool-weather outfit for me these days. The skirt is one I bought over the summer, or maybe late spring. Either way, it was just out-of-season when I bought it, and even than I wasn't certain it would be something I would end up throwing on all too often. Now I'm thanking my lucky stars that I've managed to develop some tiny bit of foresight, since I've spent the better part of most weeks in this skirt.

I've become a real creature of uniform this winter, it seems. I guess I did it a lot over the summer too--despite the collection of sundresses that seems to be growing larger even in these cold months. This year it's all high-waisted skirts with a creamy blouse, or that Madwell chambray dress with a striped shirt. I'm trying to be a little bit more mindful of my clothing purchases, especially the non-vintage ones. I'm trying to balance the will-I-really-wear-it with the but-oh-goodness-I-love-it-who-cares feelings.

  1. Love these photos! The lighting is just right. I love that moment when the sun sets and right before it gets dark. I've tried photographing this moment, but it never lasts long!

    1. I have too but I usually miss it! It got dark RIGHT after we took these, plus it was so overcast all day I'm surprised they came out! I do miss the sun though!

    1. Thank you dear! <33 I'm trying to follow a rule where I don't buy anything new-new, but if I do find something vintage that is amazing I'm letting myself go for it!

    1. Thank you so much! I ripped the sleeve a bit (haha, I'm always breaking things) as it's quite old but I think it'll be alright!

  7. You look very lovely in these pictures, Kater! It's funny how even with our closets full of pretties we always end up loving a certain outfit more than anything else and it becomes a sort of uniform. I can't help but remember when I was young and I had only 3 or 4 things in my wardrobe and every single item was so precious to me for its history and all the memories connected to it :)

    1. Me too! I never used to switch clothes out for seasons, but I finally started having to now that I'm not growing out of things and getting rid of them, but actually building a collection! Thank you dear!

    1. I really hemmed and hawed over this one! It's white, which gets so dirty, and it's short which isn't very practical for the kinds of winters we get here, but then I decided to give in! You'll have one soon though, I've been reading about the one opening late this year! Thank you so much <3

  10. Oooh love the outfit. The houses look a lot like the ones in my neighborhood. There's nothing better than an old house!

    1. I agree! A lot of the places in our neighborhood are from the 20s and 30s, and downtown is a lot of old brownstones (where I grew up) so old houses just feel better to me! Thank you!

  12. i've always wanted to do a middle of the street photo shoot, but as you say, it's a bit nerve-wracking and awkward to do in public....not to mention, the streets in hong kong are insanely busy with traffic and very narrow. it would be taking my life into my own hands if i did.

loving your winter 'uniform' very classy....

  22. I always love your outfits and your blog is so inspiring. I'm actually starting a travel blog and my mission is to stick to my style without over packing (which I always end up doing). Since you sometimes travel, do you have any packing advice?
    Thanks Lovely

  23. I love that blouse. I feel like I NEVER buy blouses and it's always a THING when I'm trying to put together an outfit with a skirt. I need to just try to find several variations of that one, haha.

  28. So lovely. It's good to be conscious about your consuming habits - especially when it comes to non-vintage purchases. I always feel like vintage is more of an investment and less likely to end up in a landfill than those oh so cute, "must have", China made pieces that catch our eye.
