Short Order.

Outfit details: Blouse: H&M (2009), Shorts: J. Crew, Shoes: J. Crew (last year), Bag: H&M (last year), Sunglasses: H&M

I resisted shorts for a long time. I've worn them here and there, but for the most part you'll find that (and I think most of my posts over the last handful of years illustrate this) I usually reach for a skirt or dress over shorts (which is, I've noticed, one of many words that gets really weird the more times you type or say it).

But it's hot out, so I give up.

There is also this thing that happens, all too often, when I cannot anticipate the garment that will become my favorite, or go-to, or whatever fashion-y buzz-word works best. I try to guess sometimes and end up with doubles of this or that thing, only to have it fade into the obscure regions of a closet or dresser. Of all the things I could have bought, and I decided to buy two of that sorry little thing.

The problem is that when you don't bother to think ahead in this manner, you end up with a blouse like this one. It fits the bill just about perfectly, does exactly what it ought to, and of course there is only one. The solitary item, languishing on it's own lonely hanger, being worn into the obliteration of seams all because I do not have the gift of foresight.

So I try not to wear it too often. Only when I'm in deep agitation about what to wear, as it will soothe my silly little dressing-up portion of my soul in just the right way.

Or, the other solution, is eat some cake.

Since the bakery I work it is closed for a long weekend, today I took my day off to be the piggiest thing since the last time I worked, and get myself two pieces of cake. The one I'm digging into is 'Avalone'--a vanilla genoise with a pomegranate mousse, and a blackberry and wine puree mousse. It's a new favorite, with the old favorite--a Savarina--lurking in the background waiting to be second dessert.

No work till Thursday also means I can paint my nails and rather than try to decide which color to go with, I decided it was best to try several.

  1. I feel exactly the same, up until recently my closet was full of dresses and skirts. It still is, but there are a few new pairs of shorts in the mix. For summer they are just so much more comfortable and breathable. My favorites are high-waisted paperbag shorts.
Have a wonderful, short filled summer!

  2. i love that blouse, i know a few people who have it and i always wish i did too! i love your nail colors by the way, and im afraid of shorts too. i litterly have an awesome collection of high waisted shorts, but every time i put them on i end up changing. but i love them on everyone else. i need to overcome this fear.

  3. I love love love your blouse! If I owned that blouse I think I'd probably wear it into tatters, too. I echo the awkwardness about shorts. Sometimes they seem like they might be a good idea, though. Those gingham ones are so cute, they definitely re-affirm that shorts-wearing could be a good idea. :)

  8. I really love your sunnies! I think painting your nails is a genius way to present indecision as a brilliant fashion accessory, as all of the colors could be used to tie your outfit together, to borrow from a classic interior design philosophy:D
    Happy weekend! xx

  11. I love your blog so much, seriously! I will never get over my jealousy that you work in a bakery, pretty much my dream! Although I have such a pathetic weakness for bakery treats I think I would develop a serious sugar related health condition in no time. The shorts look amazing by the way :)

  15. Oh man, I know what you mean. The go to garment that I should have bought two of is usually shoes for me. So many lovely shoes that I adored and wore out because they were the only ones I wanted to wear.

  16. The blouse is so pretty! (And I wouldn't mind having one of the slices of cake, either!) I'm kind of intrigued by the colourful nails, I haven't ever tried out different colours at a time, but it does look really nice!

  20. "But it's hot out, so I give up" is a common refrain for me. My kingdom for a moderate climate!

  21. I hear ya! There are a few pieces in my wardrobe I just adore but always feel a little nervous wearing because each time I do, it's one less time I get to.

  22. Such a cute outfit! I haven't seen anything like it before, which is awesome.

And I have been really really into shorts this year, whereas for the last two years I've been almost exclusively skirts and dresses. I think it's my favorite pairs of dress shorts that have influenced that transition - they are so comfy and easy to run around in, but also look good! :)

  23. I really wish I could wear shorts in the summer, but they're always far too short for my chunky thighs. These look lovely on you though.
And double cake for the win!

  26. Such a beautiful outfit! I adore the palette.

Have you ever thought about taking it to a tailor to have it replicated? I've had some vintage dresses copied by dressmakers, and when I provided my own fabric it only cost me $35 per garment which I think is very reasonable. They should be able to quote you on the spot too, so you could take it to several different ones to get the best price. I think it would be worth it for such a beautiful piece!
