Most of the time when I bother to get pictures to post here it's on days when I don't have to go to work, or when the weather is particularly good, or if I'm going somewhere that will have good spots for it. These days, anyway. When I first started posting here, it was a little different, but I'm much happier over the past year or so with the way pictures and posts come out.
But if I were telling the honest-to-goodness cross-my-heart truth, I don't dress like this every day. It's not too different on most days, but a lot of the time I'm in something a little less fussy.

Something a little more like this. First, I have to swear, they're not leggings! I'm not falling victim to the Leggings As Pants event that has swept the nation (I'm also aware that I might just be telling myself that). They are in fact pants, something more akin to a riding pant than to a proper jean or chino, much thicker than leggings. I've worn them a lot in the winter with my wellies or other boots, to make climbing the iced-over snow banks on my way to work a little bit warmer and easier.
And of course, whenever I am in doubt, I wear stripes. It was also definitely not warm enough to warrant those shoes, but I'm so sick down to my very bones of wearing socks.

I also have to admit, no matter what kind of rants I might end up with, these glasses aren't mine. BUT, before the groans start, they soon will be mine! I do need glasses to see--distance anyway, especially for movies and driving--and after watching everyone else in the blog world get their hands on some Warby Parker glasses, I decided to take advantage of their free home-try-on option. I'm wearing the Webb ones here, which are my favorite I think, that I ordered, to see how I like them. They're nice and wide (my current glasses are a bit narrow and so it's limiting in the space I can look through), although between the bangs and the lipstick I do feel a little bit (shall we say the word?) hipster-ish. Which, even using that phrase annoys me--what on earth does it even mean? And I don't want to be that person who tries so hard not to be like something. But sometimes, despite all efforts, I worry what people will say or think, even to themselves.

In the end though, I just want to wear lipstick and stripes and ponytails, and the rest can just be silence.

Oh my goodness, this post! I have so many things I need to write...
ReplyDeletefirstly, yay for two posts in two days!
Secondly, I LOVE the combo of stripes, lipstick, glasses and ponytail.
Thirdly, I understand what you mean about the legging-trousers debacle! It is so completely wrong, even if you're a leggy waif.
I am so sad right now that I live in the UK. A free try on service sounds like the best idea, especially for me who can't seem to find the right kind of squareish man glasses. I think they all look too heavy on my face. This makes me very sad. So I shall have to stick to my current ones and feel like a 15 year old when my contact lenses don't cooperate and I am forced to wear them.
And finally, I know exactly what you mean about trying not to dress like everyone else. I was like that in my early teenage years, but I try to stop myself doing it now, because it's so ridiculously counterproductive and silly.
Apologies for this comment being too long but this post was just too amazing!
Those glasses look so good on you! I have a rather "hipster" pair of glasses too, but they don't suit me nearly as well. I usually just look like the nearsighted nerd that I am in them, haha!
ReplyDeleteAnd oh god, leggings as pants. The bane of my existence. I started taking a pilates class this semester, and so I've been forced to start wearing leggings as pants twice a week. I loathe myself a little bit more every time I walk out the door in them.
this outfit seems so french. regardless of the dubious pants/leggings, you look very chic and put together.
ReplyDeletestripes with a trench is always a winner. and the lipstick is fab. i did think those were leggings at first, but then i didn't think you would wear them like that, so i had to scroll down to see what they were exactly. i bet they look infinitely less legging-like in person though.
ReplyDeleteI hope this does become a trend! (the posting).
ReplyDeleteErm, hipsters. I was feeling a bit hipster myself today, and feeling grumpy about it. But then I kind of think the hipsters just arrived and stole my kind of style. But maybe they all think that too?
Regardless, I think you're very cute with your glasses and bangs!
your hair and glasses suit you beautifully!
ReplyDeletei like the glasses...I bought 3 pairs of etsy before I found the ones I wear now. And even then I had them for well over 6 months before I was like "actually these are amazing!" I totally recommend looking there, other wise I have two pairs of glasses just sitting at my house wanting someone to wear them. I could fling you a pick as they sound like something you'd like.
ReplyDeleteI;m not sure I've ever commented at your blog before so I hope thats not creepy, but thats just the way the internet works I guess!
You look so beautiful, I'm so glad you're posting again, I've missed your posts (ur one of my fave bloggers). =)
ReplyDeleteI think there are a lot of bloggers who don't always walk out the door looking like their post pictures. I usually take mine before I leave the house in the morning only to change into something else or change a part of what I am wearing. I usually mention it but, whatever. Most of my changes are weather related. Chicago is often too extreme in weather. It could be too rainy, too cold, too blizzardy or too humid to wear my initial outfit decision. I am ok with that.
ReplyDeletesuch a cute outfit - simple, classic and very french!
ReplyDeletei also LOVE warby parker and i actually got the webbs myself at the beginning of this year (i posted about them here) i love them!
I love how simple but put together this outfit is! And I love pants but I love leggings too. It's such a dilemma. Leggings let me sit indian-style and hide in cubbies and frolick around campus like a child. But pants, I don't have to worry about my panty line or anything riding up. And I love the glasses! They frame your face well.

That glasses (I totally have a crush on that glasses!), ponytail, lipstick, and outfit are all perfect on you! Gorgeous! I really love those photos... so, I hope you don't mind that I put it on my tumblr =)

Thx! =D
super cute outfit! i love the addition of the glasses!
ReplyDeleteI'm crossing my fingers in hope that there will be another post tomorrow! Lipstick, stripes, ponytail, they're all my favourite things on you:)
ReplyDeleteso so pretty! you look so lovely and that red lipstick just stands out ♥
ReplyDeletebring on the honesty! awesome post, it was fresh and genuine and most of us can relate. plus, the laid-back look is great and it's what you like, so who cares about the label or what others might think (although again, kudos for admitting that we all wonder from time to time). i like it and i think the most interesting people vary the way their interpret their style.
ReplyDeleteAhh I would love it so much if you updated this often always! :) You are my biggest online style inspiration, for sure :)
ReplyDeleteI am feeling very envious of your adorable glasses - they suit you so well! I wish there was a similar service in England!
Loving your stripes and trench coat too :)
P.s. You also make me wish for bangs!
my prescription runs out next week and i am definitely jumping on the warby-parker bandwagon! i loove the frames you picked!
ReplyDeleteI also definitely don't post my everyday blah outfits. I am so anti-leggings as pants! I see it so often here. It's horrible! Also I see people in the gym just in normal leggings and I know there's nothing wrong with it but that annoys me too. They could at least be proper gym leggings!
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit, and I think you should stop apologising because I love seeing everyday outfits, you look fantastic! x
ReplyDeleteWe have something in common, the hair color ;)
ReplyDeleteYou look great!
"Hipster" or no those glasses look freaking awesome on you.
ReplyDeleteGreat outfit all around :)

Those glasses really suit you, especially with the red lipstick.
ReplyDeleteStripes are a fail safe option, love them :)
I am loving your hair color + lipstick shade! In the mean time, I am still looking for the perfect striped shirt. I know its a staple, but I just can't find the perfect one. Maybe if I shop in your closet... haha!
ReplyDeleteLook at you being all English major-y and mangling Hamlet. That should be part of those armadillo memes.

Just wanted to say I love your blog and this is a really great, honest post. If this outfit is more indicative of what you wear day-to-day then I think you look lovely and the glasses really suit you :) Looking forward to more of your posts
ReplyDeleteyou're too cute!
ReplyDeletelovely post! :)
leggings should NEVER be worn as pants. Thank you for making that statement.
ReplyDeleteYou look so classy. I really enjoy your blog.

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog. It's lovely! I think this outfit is very fun and I really enjoy your writing.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I love how honest you are in your posts. I know the leggings as pants idea is pretty tricky.. though personally I try to avoid it at all costs! Anyway, I love this look-- it's so classic & french. And the ponytail/glasses/lipstick look is something I will be trying very soon!

I'm really happy not to be alone with my disgust of leggins, we should start a group on facebook^^, but I like the combination of the not-leggins with the flats so much. I know it sounds weird, but you've got quite beautiful ankles. And about your glasses. I think they suit you and I myself wear those super big glasses, because I love that your view isn't that restricted and I kind of just love the style. I'm sure you'll become a happy wearer of glasses with these ones!
ReplyDeleteYour light skin looks so gorgeous with the lipstick and glasses! Stunner!

Hello. First time we drop our comment on your blog. We love the way you mix the jacket with the stripes shirt. Really work on you. Mind to visit and leave your comment? xo♥

I love the outfit! I don't think the stripes, lipstick, glasses, bangs combo is too hipster in the least! I think it's classic and classy and really natural on you. You look comfortable and pretty. And stripes and a trench are an irresistibly easy pairing for a sharp look.
ReplyDeleteThe glasses are great. I must try those. I'm so sick of mine--I feel stuck in 1997 whenever I have to wear them.
xoxo,
Gina
I wouldn't say you look hipster-ish with those glasses. I also have what people say "hipster glasses" but I really don't mind because that hipster thing is something what will go away sooner or later and I don't see myself wearing any other pair of glasses so.. agh, I see really bad and at least I have lens on my glasses which is something that many of those hispter kids don't know what it is.
ReplyDeletei love those glasses.
ReplyDeleteand they are adorable on you!
dont worry!
Oh dear, now I must go and take my leggings off.
ReplyDeleteBetter luck next time, I suppose. =]
I love this outfit! So stylish and casual and just yup. Perfect! :)
ReplyDeleteI used to be one of those people who would groan when I realized someone was wearing glasses just for fun cause I've had to wear glasses since I was 5 and failed the vision test in kindergarten. But now I think glasses for all who want them! They're cute and just cause someone has perfect vision doesn't mean they can't partake in some cute face accessories. :)
Glasses for all I say! 8)
your regular is still so stylish.
ReplyDeleteI think you look simply fantastic!
ReplyDeleteyou look beautiful :)

Ahh i love love the simplicity of this outfit, i'm a huge sucker for stripes and you look great with the red lipstick. I might try using it sooner or later :D
ReplyDeleteI think the glasses suits you real well! you look different, reminds me of a fine art student somehow haha
You look great in glasses! My glasses are a bit hipsterish, but I like them and am no hipster so I wear them proudly!
ReplyDeleteI think your jacket is really cool!
