The Red Alternative.

I spend a lot of time these days thinking about lipstick. I've really become quite a fan of the stuff, but it complicates several aspects of life. I have to be very aware not to injest 90% of it, to mind that I don't smudge it. It curbs some of my snacking tendencies, which is quite helpful, but it does complicate things a bit. I've gotten a bit sick of the standard red, and after seeing some of the autumnal J. Crew models in their fuchsia (I think that's the color) lipstick I picked up a tube for myself during my weekly trip to Target.

It's my new favorite thing. I like red, but it can get a bit shocking, and sometimes it's a bit too classic for a given day. I'm really awful at giving lipstick advice since my usual mode of choosing on is to hang out in the aisle and grab the brightest version of whatever color I want to wear, but so far I've had lots of luck with this one. It's Revlon, fuchsia, and it's the same kind as the lipstick I wore in my Mad Men casting call photos (except that one was 'Coral'). As much as I swear by my MAC, these colors and tubes are probably my new favorite. The texture is smooth without being shiny, and it doesn't bleed all over my face. It also doesn't do that really horrible thing where you are left with just the rings of lipstick around the edges and without color in the middle. Also, it's six bucks. I can deal with that.

I'm entering into awkward territory outfit-wise. It's chilly outside, and the last thing I want to do is put on anything besides leggings and gigantic socks, but I also don't want to look like your average bear who ought to be hibernating. Such is winter. The shirt was an impulse buy, even though I swore to myself I would not let my grubby little hands get hold of another striped shirt.

The other reason I get bummed for winter is that suddenly outfit shots become much more complicated. I am loathe to take my coat off outside, but it covers the whole purpose of the post, and inside it's hard to find spots that aren't 1.) covered in laundry 2.) have flattering or halfway decent lighting. We will see how I will survive this winter.

Outfit details (I figure I ought to start adding this):
Shirt: J. Crew
Skirt: Anthropologie
Belt: No idea

And for those who asked, my coat in the previous post is from J. Crew as well.

  1. I can relate with the lipstick. I have a tendency to lick my lips or bite them a little bit when I'm bored. I would love to wear lipstick a lot more, but I just hate the upkeep that comes with it. That lipstick color looks wonderful on you.

  3. I am so envious of your porcelain skin and how striking lipstick looks on you.

  4. Mmm lipstick does tend to complicate things, especially eating and kissing! Now that I have become a slave to red lips (by which I mean I will not leave the house without them!) I have to take precautions to make sure that I don't end up looking like the Joker! Like for example, I always wipe mine off with a tissue if I'm going to eat something because otherwise it just gets all over my face.

Really really love this new shade on you, I used to wear a very similar one before discovering red :P

  5. The tone looks perfect on your skin!
I've been always with the nudes and pastel colours... I should try for another brighter one nearly. It looks beautiful on you!

  6. this is a perfect shade of pink! i might have to try that brand of lipstick, because my MAC addiction is doing terrible things to my wallet!

  7. Fuschia's my go-to red lipstick alternative also. I have this theory that hot pink looks fabulous on everyone, and you just added one more piece of confirmed evidence to my list :)...Love the stripes (you can never have too many!) with the long ladylike skirt. Princess length skirts are definitely on my list of wants these days!

  9. Loving this shade of lipstick, might need to give it a try. Im having the same worries about the impending winter weather. Inside photos never come out as well for me as the outside ones but I am a bit of a pansy when it comes to coldness

  10. The lipstick is great! I still haven't had the nerve to try it :)

And I agree on the winter putting a damper on photos! I go to work, it's dark. I leave from work, it's dark. grrr!

  11. I know what you mean about winter! This past year has been a big fashion/wardrobe change for me since I lost a lot of weight and also because my style changed a lot... And I found myself with no winter clothing. So I have been stocking up on wool skirts and big snuggly sweaters. I look like an old woman a lot of the time, but I'm comfy! I'm sad about winter too for the outfit posts... I'm stuck taking all my photos indoors because of the freezing rain lately :( I think that shade of lipstick really suits you, and that skirt is awesome!

  12. Oooh I love the mixed prints!

You look so excellent in lipstick-- you're pretty much my Lipstick Inspiration. I've been wearing it a little lately (it's actually really pigmented gloss, but still a giant departure for me!) and I still feel a bit awkward in it. I like that it opens me up to this whole new look, with lots of possibilities.. but it definitely takes some practice.

  13. i always rub off my lipstick and smear it all over, and stin my clothes. i'm kind of useless with it. but it's oh so lovely. and i've been dreaming of shades like this as well!

  14. This shade of lipstick looks so pretty on you! Lipstick is my #1 makeup obsession. I have about a billion different tubes! The only annoying thing is having to freshen up your lipstick after you eat or drink, but I've gotten used to it.

  15. You have the perfect lips to carry off a bold lipstick, and the fuschia suits your porceline complexion! It is a nice swift from red, which, almost feels more serious. Looks great!

  19. I'm pretty sure you could pull off pretty much anything, and it is no surprise that lipstick looks so good on you.

I know what you mean about striped tops- for some reason whenever I'm shopping I'm automatically drawn to stripes. I can't help it I guess.

  32. I can sympathize with the winter dilemma. The snow really discourages coat-less photos.
This post makes me want to try lipstick some more. I think I may finally be getting to the age where wearing it isn't ridiculous.

  33. I love your skirt! I obsess about lipstick too, you are not alone! I much prefer (matte) lipstick over lip gloss; which I think is too greasy and comes off easily. First time visiting your blog and I just spend an insane amount of time on it. Love it!
