Too Much of a Thing.

I'm in one of those funks where nothing feels quite right. Knowing what to wear suddenly seems daunting and my old striped shirt trick isn't quite settling my spirits the way it usually does. I need a haircut, but I don't know what to do with it, and I haven't much nerve to change it too much anyway.

It might be the rain, or the curse of favorite pants that don't fit because of Nutella croissants, or a general malaise brought on by years of too many prim little dresses. In any case, I'm have this weird feeling of uncertainty about my style. I'm a little sick of things that are twee and overly girly, and I find myself gravitating towards things that are a bit more cool, effortless, dilapidated. I'm starting to really enjoy pants. My goal these days seems to be to try and dress by just throwing things on, adding layers, all that.

In the end though, I end up in something like this. It's a little, to use a word more than once in a post, prim and precious. I suspect I've gotten used to dressing this way, so now it's the kind of thing that comes eaisly--but of course, as soon as I think I've got the hang of one thing, I feel strange and want another!

For the moment though, I'll just go along with everything and figure out what to wear somehow.

  5. I've been in a v. similar rut lately; I have tonnes of cute full-skirted dresses, lots of colour, & all I want to wear is drapey greys/blacks/navys/etc. Edging up a wardrobe is hard work when one has dressed v. girly for years!

  6. You always look so lovely
That rut might not be a bad thing, in the sense that it will perhaps get you to try different things or stumble upon things you like by accident

  8. I'm a total stranger so my opinion is of very little consequence, but this is my favourite of the looks I've seen you in in months. Your funk becomes you. :-)

  9. That feeling is so familiar. Your outfit is very pretty though - I love the grey blazer with the breton stripes.

  10. Maybe it's a good thing. People's preferences change, all things change, it's very natural. It could be fleeting but I'd encourage you to explore whatever you're feeling now...but who knows, you might feel completely restored tomorrow.

  12. You look lovely! :) But I feel the exact same way sometimes- I've gotten tired of dressing so girly, so lately I've kind of been rebelling against it in layers and pullovers and boots. Change can be nice!

  13. I get that malaise too. Often mine has less fashionable results though. I fall into "it's ok i'll just wear a t-shirt and jeans" rut and that's really hard to get out of :(

if it's any consolation I don't think your style is sickeningly precious

  14. I absolutely love this outfit, but I think I understand what you mean. I can't give up my cute vintage dresses, but part of me wants to dress edgy and modern...and maybe be taken seriously for once.

  16. You look darling to me! I wear way too many stripes. It's a problem.

I'm in a weird place where I like girly things if they're well-worn or a bit rustic.

  18. I get like that sometimes - I like girly retro clothes but it does feel prim - so I just wear black and strut to make myself feel more bad ass, ha ha

  19. Black and charcoal gray always get me...so, I avoid changes even when in a funk and lean more towards those two for comfort.

Your hair is really, really adorable! I vote to just get a trim and keep it the same:)

  23. I actually think this outfit looks adorable!! I can't wait to try my own version of it.

It's very normal to question your own style when it gets comfortable, I think. I just spent the last year experimenting and wearing things just because they were out of my comfort zone, but now looking back on my blog I realize I don't even like lots of those outfits.

  25. I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes I feel like I dress to 'girly' and 'prim' and should try to be a bit more 'edgy', but then sometimes I think thaat's just peer pressure. It's hard not to question if you're stuck in a rut when you feel comfortable though. This outfit is really adorable though Kater, I know that's not what you wanted but hey! Haha

Hullo, are you me? I'm feeling exactly the same. I'm moving away from peter pan collars and looking out for something more structured, more androgynous. I don't know where the good shirts are at though. Charity shops aren't working out!
