File Me Away.

I save outfits. Sometimes I spend ages thinking about what to wear (in general or with other things) when I ought to be thinking about pretty much anything else, before coming up with an outfit. Then I save it. Occasionally I write it down on a post-it note and wait. In the meantime I wear a lot of striped shirts and rolled jeans, lurking around my closet and waiting for the weather to ship-shape up and stop being a complete jerk.

For a while I stopped doing this. I decided that I would wear whatever I wanted whenever I wanted to wear it and wouldn't give two hoots about what anyone said. That went on for a while, but one does get tired of the wind up your skirt and snow in your boots (not to mention soggy hems and rain-flattened hair), until I relented and decided it was alright to wear a t-shirt sometimes. If I felt really down about it I could always wear something ridiculous on my head (a bow, something floral) to make up for it. I started filing outfits away again.

Dress from this post, one of two from a day's loot at Recycling Red Dresses

I mean, maybe it's because I' m hard on my clothes. All elbows ripping, hems pulled out, holes in strange places, not to mention drips, drops, and spills. What if each garment only has so many wears in it before the poor thing turns faded and sad, looses its shape, and becomes a dejected shade of its former loveliness and glory? If there are a finite number of wears to a dress, what is a girl to do? Especially with vintage, which has survived this long, but is usually a little bit older than anything else in the closet, and so while it can run with the best of them, doesn't it get a little bit winded a little bit faster? Am I wearing out my metaphors and queries here?

I do a lot of sitting around and waiting for the right hair day, occasion, or weather in order to wear an outfit. Sometimes, as is the blogger's dilemma I suppose, I wonder if it's worth wearing a cute outfit if there is no one to photograph it for me to post on here. I'm not saying I dress for the internet or anything but, maybe I do, just a little. I'm not really bothered by that, because I save my little outfits and new dresses anyway, whether someone sees them or not. There's a what if I don't do this dress/blouse/skirt/thingy justice with the rest of my outfit today feeling.

I almost saved this dress even longer. The first time you wear a dress that somehow meets your dreams is always laden with meaning and a bit of dread. It's never the first time you wear it again!

Then I decided I was being ridiculous and tossed it on for an afternoon, even though I had to tie the straps up in little knots because they were far too long and then switch my shoes since they rubbed and we walked up a hill in the heat. Still filing it though, for a more glorious wear.

  1. This is fantastic! I love the dots and stripes together.

I definitely used to be like that. If I had extra time in the morning, I used to try on a million good outfits and then end up wearing something boring just because I didn't feel like wearing something interesting (or because I knew I wouldn't have time to photograph it that day--it's too bad that's a motivating force). I feel like it takes a lot of energy to wear something interesting all day. Lately, though, I just haven't been thinking up too many outfits and I'm trying not to let that bother me too much.

  3. I love the combination of stripes and dots in this dress, fantastic! I've bought vintage dresses months in advance of an event (birthday, a gallery opening) and will be 'good' and not wear it until the particular day. Very difficult to do but it makes it even more special when you wear it!

  4. Wow, that dress is fun! And the necklace is amazing!

I know what you mean about the whole dressing up thing. Sometimes I get bummed when I'm wearing a cute outfit and don't have time to photograph it..instead of just enjoying it!

  5. Adorable dress! The graphic print makes it so striking.

I do the same thing but I feel like saving outfits doesn't allow me to wear nice things as often as I could or should. I'm choosy about photographing outfits so I think you're on the money about dressing (a little) for your blog..I suppose it's natural to be selective about how you want to be seen.

Is that a Honey & Stone necklace? I love their stuff! I have a honeycomb necklace as well :)

  6. oooh, I love this dress. I often feel similarly when it comes to vintage. I truly love vintage but I don't it was there before me and I want it to last. I often worry about wearing it or changing the hem to make it more wearable. I just try to take good care of them to reduce my worries about it.

  7. Cute cute dress. Dresses are really special to me while they are still in the store, before I've bought them, when they're in my closet, first wear or no they are just another addition to my closet, another thing that makes me me...

  8. omg - we've had the longest winter here - and it just drained me of alll my fashion/style imagination and motivation!! I used to make outfit notes too - and then the weather just made everything impossible - but the sun has finally come out and things (clotheswise) are looking brighter!

  9. I often plan outfits in advance. Especially very special dresses, which can wait to be worn for months sometimes. Very pretty dress and I love your necklace - reminds me of little bicycle wheels.

  10. I just love this dress--polka dots and stripes together?! Crazy-good!

I tend to save certain dresses/outfits too. Mostly because I am a total klutz, and to wear certain pieces day-to-day would mean inevitable doom. Then there are the outfits I save for the "perfect" occasion/hair day/weather/mood. ;) lol. I've been trying really hard the past month to get over my fear of ruining things and just wear them! lol. It's tough though. ;)

  11. I do this too. I LOVE that dress. I thought it was two pieces, and nice pop of color with the blue belt. Good hair too!

  12. I do the filing thing too! I have "ideal" outfit ideas written everywhere: my phone, laptop, random notebooks. But I almost never get to wear them out because they're always inappropriate -- whether for the place, occasion or weather. But when the perfect time does come along, I bask in the glory of knowing I will be dressed to kill.

And Kater, your dress is phenomenal.

  19. I just love the contrasts in this dress they work so well!
I completely sympathise with some of the issues you've raised here, its not just the internet though, its pressure from your peers - everyone feels it. You buy a beautiful dress and wait for the day that you know a certain someone will see you in it or when you know you'll be photographed in it, its sort of comforting to see bloggers admitting this though because when you look at the top top bloggers they have immense pressure to look like that ALL the time. They can't have off days because maybe they'll be front row at some fashion week, have to meet an important mag editor or they could be snapped for a street style blog. Be thankful you can have your off days, even if you feel like your outfit doesn't shine, I'm sure you do :)

  20. That is a lovely dress!

Oh, and that's how I plan outfits as well, waiting for the right weather, hair day, etc. I'll have outfits stacked up in my mind waiting to be worn.

  21. Sometimes I plan my perfect outfit for the next day right before I sleep.

And usually when I wake up and put it on it suddenly feels totally wrong. Why!

On another note, the dress and the ribbon are great together!

  23. i think about this all the time! sometimes i get super frustrated and think oh man, this outfit was "wasted" on the general public and no one in fash blog world got to see it! but then i listen to myself in my head and think "you are craaaazy, lexie!"

this dress is not crazy though. it's gorgeous! and is that a stone & honey necklace?

  25. I have a massive list of outfits ‘to wear’. They keep getting added to my notebook, often start out on post its as well. I know what you mean about being hard on clothes too, the worst is my shoes – I can kill a pair of shoes in a couple months!

  28. The stripes and dots are fun together.

I usually only plan outfits ahead of time if i"m going somewhere. I think it shows that you're a creative person that you do that. :)

  30. I ADORE the necklace.

And I definitely save my nicest clothes. There is one skirt from Anthropologie in particular, that has embroidered birds that fly across a sunset sky and - as much as I love it, I can't bring myself to wear it as often anymore because the embroidery is starting to look a little worn.

It's a truly special occasion if I wear it.

  39. I do the same thing! I bought the prettiest dress at a vintage shop in Florida and haven't worn it yet because I haven't deemed anything worthy enough. So silly! And I write down outfits like mad and then won't actually wear them for weeks. I should really stop that.

  40. I know exactly how you feel. I sometimes feel that in my vintage I need to be extra careful because a perfect vintage dress is precious and might only have a certain number of wears left in it. Also, sometimes wearing a tee shirt feels so good. I really enjoyed reading this (and lets face it, in our A.D.D. world of blogging, text often gets overlooked).

  44. Thank you for the sweet comment! I'm delighted to have found your blog :) I know exactly what you mean about saving outfits - although, I do have a tendency, when I get something new, to wear it multiple times in one week...which probably breaks some unwritten fashion blogger rule, but I don't care!
