RagaMuffin etc.

I feel like this is the sort out outfit that make-over shows tout as really unflattering. Kind of weird, somewhat formless pants--cuffed, so that they would theoretically shorten the leg--topped by horizontal stripes and an amorphous jacket with little-to-no shape. I don't particularly care, and I don't happen to think this is terribly unflattering, but it's just interesting I think.

I've taken to snipping ribbons at work and tying them in my hair. It's funny cotton ribbon, which is nice because it doesn't slide out of my ponytail, and sort of un-precious-ifies a hair bow in the first place.

Other outfit notes include: it was a bit too chilly not to wear a proper coat, but I don't care, or socks (especially since I know that March is no promise at all of any kind of weatherly reward). This is also about the 20th striped top I have (I have no idea if that's an exaggeration or an approximation) and it's almost perfect. I also call these my Street Urchin jeans, since they are kind of baggy and have a hole in the knee, and when worn with an equally shapeless coat it feels kind of endearingly ragamuffin. That is the intent anyway.

  1. It's a shame when you have to cover up a perfectly interesting outfit (and I think it IS!) with a coat.

  2. I think that look's name should be "ragamuffin chic with a touch of referee"

  3. I love the cuffed pants with the shoes. Haha, make-over shows are totally ridiculous.

  4. ragamuffing is not the word id use to describe the outfit - id go with a quirk take on Parisian chic. ck :) x

  5. I love this- this is the kind of scruffy boyishness I wish I could bring to my outfits- unfortunately, I am struggling with this somewhat. The first thing would actually to buy another pair of trousers other than the one pair of jeans I own.

  6. ha! love the shape! the cuffed pants with the stripes are so over-the-top, great. at the moment, I'm totally in love with a bulky egg-shape leather coat. it's so relaxing to say goodbye to a feminine silhouette ...

  7. Oh I have a striped top problem too! I considered doing a post called “serial offender” and photographing them all but was worried my habit might be shocking even to fashion blog readers.
I have a pair of similar street urchin jeans. Do you find the cold air gets in the holes? I used to get the oddest little bits of cold skin when I lived in London…

  8. I really like this outfit! Especially the brogues, the more I see chic people wearing them the more I want a pair of my own.

  9. Really cool outfit!
I love stripes and your jeans has a good cut!

  10. I LOVE your outfit! I wear the same thing all the time. I love how pkjb describes it "a quirk take on Paris chic". Thanks for posting, I think this is what I'll wear today! p.s. can you do a striped shirt post and show us some of yours and let us know where you got them? I have 2, and definitely want more. I'm glad to read others have several!

  11. Very adorable in what I think of as English major chic (says the former English major). How do you wear shoes like that without socks though? My feet would be all sweaty.

  12. I really like this! I think it has a cool casual French vibe to it.

  13. Aww man, thanks everyone <33!

Gail: I've been thinking of doing one for a while, I might have to soon! The one pictured is from J. Crew :)

Erin: I am fibbing a bit here--I hate, hate, hate not wearing something on my feet, so when I don't want to wear socks I wear knee-high sheer stockings. It keeps my feet from sweating so that my shoes last longer, plus it changes how your shoes fit with or without them :)

  14. ahh kater i am the opposite of you! i hate wearing socks ... i hate winter mostly because socks are soooo necessary ... especialy thick wooly ones! ugh!

  16. I feel you on the whole stripe obsession. They are starting to accumulate in my closet and I dont mind at all.
Ribbons, thats a good idea. Sometimes my pony tails are so boring, thanks!

  17. I like this look. I think it would look good with some white anklets to give it a more retro look.

  18. I like it-it's sort of a "structured loose" look you can see in some street-style blogs.

  19. you are definitely NOT the before look on a makeover show, the only way the jeans could be is with an oversized tshirt and sneakrs you know? very chic.

  20. tres chic! very cute/cool outfit...modern day beatnik with a smattering of retro thrown in!

  31. I think its still well edited and effortlessly chic. And you are comfortable, there is a lot to be said for that. Some days you just need comfy + cozy (+ baggy).
    Its almost spring :)

  32. There is nothing not perfect about this outfit - I adore evey last bit of it. I've only just begun wearing stripes, but now I can hardly bring myself to wear anything but! :)

  33. Not unflattering in the slightest, c'est chic! I wish I could wear jeans and look thos good!

  34. Hmmm...I think maybe you can tug in the top and put a skinny vintage belt over the jeans. :D Either way, I think Parisian stripes can never go wrong :)

  35. I love that coat of yours! So adorable.
