Thoughts on Flowers.

Hello! I did not perish! Thank you for all your wonderful well-wishes! Sadly, I will continue to be scarce for another week or so as I finish up the semester, but I could not resist a post today. I am not at Tulip Fest, it's not something I've ever been to, even though I grew up just around the corner from it! Somehow, it just doesn't appeal to me--it's a kind of strange snobbery I guess--probably because I don't like tulips very much.

The tulips are too red in the first place, they hurt me.
Even through the gift paper I could hear them breathe
Lightly, through their white swaddlings, like an awful baby.
Their redness talks to my wound, it corresponds.
They are subtle: they seem to float, though they weigh me down,
Upsetting me with their sudden tongues and their colour,
A dozen red lead sinkers round my neck.
-Tulips, Sylvia Plath

(I know, it's not about tulips. But still, my inexplicable and irrational dislike of them is described here on a surface level.)

I much prefer lilacs, even if their smell makes me feel fuzzy and ill. As long as they stay on bushes and not indoors I am happy as a clam.

  1. I'm in love with both outfits! :) And, yes, tulips are one of my least favourite flowers as well, I think they're kind of boring

And I agree with your opinions of both tulips and lilacs, I miss lilacs so very much right now. Tulips smell terrible.

  10. lilacs are pretty much the best smelling flowers out there. well maybe jasmine is not so bad... and lily of the valley. when i was little we used to look for lilac blossoms with odd numbers of petals and eat them. supposedly it was for good luck. i think it was mostly for salmonella.

Lilacs are my favorite flowers! It was somehow surprising to see that you talked about them in this post.
I like tulips, for their simplicity, but a lot of people I know feel the same about them as you :))!

Shen-shen: Yep it's a birdhouse! I don't know where it came from, we've got a bunch of little birdhouses in the yard but I think that one is one of my favorites!

Rebecca: The skirt in the second picture is vintage and thrifted, I wore it once last summer (http://allthishappiness.blogspot.com/2008/06/crushed-in-library.html) as well.

I love all the discussion on flowers! Haha, it's quite funny, it seems flowers for most people, like numbers and things, have personalities and prejudices :D

  32. that last outfit with the denim jacket is amazing.
    yay 90s revival!
i've never had much experience with tulips - coming from a hot dry place, there's never been a chance to. now that i'm in england, the spontanaeity of the spring blooms - tulips, daffodils - amazes and delights me.
some tulips are so dark purple they're almost black. it's strange.
